Codes and Conventions for different Genres

This is a very general list of Codes and Conventions used in movies of different genres.

First of all what are codes and conventions:
Codes:- Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories- technical and symbolic. 
If focused on magazine, there are written codes such as the language you speak or write.

Conventions:- Conventions are the ways in which codes are organised in a product.

First Talking about the types of Genres and then their Codes and conventions.
1. Action: In this genre the protagonist is thrust into a series of challenges. They typically include violence, chases, etc.
       Codes :                                 Symbolic Codes:  1. In most of them they wear expensive clothing.
                                                                            2. the themes which they mostly use for these movies
                                                              are : family issues, revenges, death, car chases , gun fights, etc.
                                                                            3.They mostly take place in big cities with sky                                    scrapers (Example : Dubai was the location for Mission : Impossible- Ghost Protocol).
                                                                            4. The Hero always controls the actions.
                                    Technical Codes: 1. A lot of editing is used (especially for scenes where                                                                                                                       explosions are shown (CGI).   
                                                                 2. Sound effects : Intense music, gun shots, people                                                                                                                                screaming, explosions,etc.
                                                                 3. Camera Shots: Close ups, establishing shots , tracking                                                                                                              shots (chase scenes).
                                      Written Codes: Story line: Hero fights the evil, trying to stop them.
2. Comedy: They are light-hearted dramas, crafted to amuse, entertain and provoke enjoyment.
   Codes:  Symbolic Codes: 1. Take place in a bright environment. Places where people socialise. Example: Cafes.
                                             2. As the environment is bright means that the lightning used will be                                                       bright as well. Bright and happy light shows that the scene is happy.
                                            3. Props are mostly used for slapstick comedy.
                                            4. The characters are either idiotic or highly intelligent which bring funny                                                    situations to happen.
Technical Codes: 1. The camera work is naturalistic.
                             2. Digetic and Non-Digetic sounds are used. Non-Digetic are used to put emphasis                                        on a scene.
3. Adventure: Are exciting stories, with new experience or exotic locales.They are similar to Action Films.
Codes:      Symbolic Codes: 1. Are set in locations like the jungle, mountain or an island.
                                              2. Their goal is to complete missions where they have to hunt for a treasure.
                                              3. In many Adventure films the characters are modern while the background or the setting is, as one would say, historic.
            Example: Jumanji (both parts), Journey to the centre of the Earth (both parts), etc
                                              4. One can say that in these kinds of films, there are "mystical objects".
                                              5. The story line, just how it is in Action Films, the hero wins/ is                                                              successful in completing their mission.
                                              6. Props used include: Swords, backpacks, gold coins, skulls, skeletons,                                                   papyrus paper, etc.
              Technical Codes: 1. The camera work is fast. Again just like action films, chasing scenes are also present.
                                           2. The sound effects used over here are the sword sounds, sound of  nature, footsteps, etc. But upbeat music is also used. ( In Jumanji, an upbeat music always comes on when the games things start to come to the real word.

4. Horror: are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating  and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience.
 Codes:     Symbolic Codes: 1. Takes place where the character is hopeless. (Example: the woods, a summer camp, an abandoned amusement park, a nonfunctional day at school, a house in the middle of no where.
                                              2. Dark colours used
                                              3. Religious items (most common: the Cross and the Bible)
                 Technical Codes:  1. Canted Angles (For confusion)
                                              2. Long Tracking Angles (Create tension)
                                              3. Point Of View Angles
                                              4. Depth of field
                                              5. Extreme Close ups (To show fear)
                                              6. Quiet scenes with sudden sounds
                                              7. Slow editing.
